There is no example of a shift pattern with 1st and 2nd gear side-by-side on any manual transmission. This is because of the operation of constant-mesh manual transmissions and Non-synchronous "crash" gearboxs; with sliding-mesh design. A manual transmission has 3 shafts: the input shaft, countershaft, and output shaft. The input shaft connects to the engine and spins whenever the clutch is engaged.The countershaft has gears that are always connected to the input shaft's gears. The output shaft gears are also always connected to the countershaft gears, but they can spin separately.Using collars controlled by shift rods, the output shaft can be locked to the speed of the chosen gear. The fixed and free gears can be on either the input or output shaft. For example, a five-speed transmission may have the first and second gear selectors on the countershaft and the third, fourth, and fifth selectors on the main shaft.When the car is stopped in neutral with the clutch engaged, the third, fourth, and fifth gear pairs do not move. In neutral, the output shaft gears are not locked, letting the input and output shafts turn separately.For reverse gear, an idler gear is used to change the direction of the output shaft.In many transmissions, the input and output shafts can be locked together to create a direct-drive ratio of 1:1.
