A regular sound at school for boys and girls, and at home for me and my two sisters. Fewer strokes but harder certainly quietened us all down years ago. One teacher named his big plimsoll "the leveller" because he could use it in the same way on boys and girls bottoms, whereas the cane was usually applied to girls hands and usually to boys behinds.
